In the first story, a vehicle was considered suspicious because it was being driven around with a safe attached to it by a chain.
Police got wind of the incident around 6 a.m. when someone reported a suspicious vehicle. It was deemed suspicious because it had a safe attached to it by a chain and the driver was dragging it through the intersection of 45th and Hamilton. Officers caught up with the mobile incident at 45th and Nicholas where they verified that the tip was accurate. The second story involves two guys that ran over a parking meter and stop sign. That alone wouldn't make an interesting story though. They proceeded to return to the scene and steal the parking meter in front of a cop who was writing up the incident.
The suspect, noticing the officers, responded by escaping. The escape began with a drive to 47th and Cuming where the suspect abandoned the car and ran away. Police converged on the area, established a perimeter and found no one.
As for the safe: it's sound. It was apparently pilfered from the Runza restaurant at 1325 Northwest Radial Highway where, according to a police statement, "officers learned that forced entry was made," and they further concluded that, "the suspect stole a safe from the business."
Officers arrived at the scene around 2:30 a.m., but by that time the men had left. While officers were filling out a report in the nearby Brant Office Supply parking lot, they noticed the truck return. They watched the two men get out, pick up the broken meter and start carrying it towards the truck.
Stuart Ross, 18, is charged with possession of stolen property, careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Thomas Yule, 20, is charged with possession of property obtained by a crime.
